Which gaming processor to choose in 2026? AMD vs Intel — The DSGate Guide
The processor (CPU) is the second most important component in a gaming PC, right behind the graphics card. But unlike the GPU, where every euro invested is directly visible on screen, the CPU is a more subtle choice: too weak, it bottlenecks your graphics card; too powerful, it's wasted money.
At DSGate, we assemble PCs with AMD and Intel CPUs every day, on both DDR4 and DDR5 platforms. This guide is based on our real-world combos — those we build, test, and ship from our workshop in Paris.
What you need to understand before choosing
In gaming, the processor has two main roles. First, it manages game logic: character AI, physics, network calculations in multiplayer. Second, it "feeds" the graphics card by sending rendering instructions. If the CPU can't keep up with the GPU, FPS drops: this is the famous bottleneck.
Three criteria truly matter:
Single-core performance (IPC) — This is the #1 factor in gaming. Most games primarily use 1 to 4 cores. A processor with high IPC and high boost frequencies will perform better in games than a CPU with many cores but low IPC.
Number of cores — 6 cores / 12 threads are sufficient for pure gaming in 2026. 8 cores / 16 threads provide real comfort for multitasking (gaming + streaming + Discord + browser). Beyond that, it's useful for content creation but not for FPS.
Platform (DDR4 vs DDR5) — In 2026, DDR4 remains the best value for money for gaming. DDR5 is faster but significantly more expensive (RAM + motherboard). The performance difference in games is only 5 to 10%.
Our 7 gaming processors: from budget to premium
DDR4 Platform — The heart of our range
This is where 90% of our DSGate configurations are found. DDR4 is mature, affordable, and the CPUs that go with it offer unbeatable performance-to-price ratios.
AMD Ryzen 5 5500 — The clever budget (~€99-110)
The Ryzen 5 5500 is the cheapest CPU capable of running a decent gaming PC in 2026. With its 6 cores / 12 threads on Zen 3 architecture (Cezanne) and a TDP of only 65W, it consumes little, heats little, and the included stock cooler is sufficient.
Its assets: an unbeatable price under €110, an AM4 socket with very affordable B450/B550 motherboards, and sufficient performance for competitive titles at 1080p.
Its limitations: reduced L3 cache to 16 MB (vs 32 MB for the 5600X) and PCIe 3.0 support only (no PCIe 4.0). In practice, this means 15 to 37% lower gaming performance compared to the 5600X depending on the game, especially CPU-intensive ones.
At DSGate, we pair it with the RTX 3050, Arc B570, or Arc B580 for configurations between €750 and €1030.
For whom? Tight budgets, competitive gamers who want to maximize the GPU without overspending on the CPU.
Intel i5-10500 — The Intel budget option (~€99-110)
The Intel counterpart to the Ryzen 5 5500. Same price, same number of cores (6C/12T), same goal: to run an entry-level gaming PC without breaking the bank.
The i5-10500 runs on an LGA 1200 socket, with slightly lower IPC than the Ryzen 5 5500 in gaming, but proven drivers and compatibility. It's a safe, straightforward choice.
At DSGate, it powers our M5-I (with RTX 3050) and M5-II/G5 (with RTX 2060) configurations at €730-750.
For whom? Those who prefer the Intel platform or find a good deal on an LGA 1200 motherboard.
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X — The AM4 sweet spot (~€140-160)
The Ryzen 5 5600X is simply the best value AM4 gaming processor in 2026. Same number of cores as the 5500 (6C/12T), but with doubled L3 cache (32 MB), PCIe 4.0 support, and higher frequencies (boost up to 4.6 GHz).
In gaming, the difference with the 5500 is significant. According to TechSpot benchmarks, the 5600X outperforms the 5500 by 15% in Marvel Rivals, 15% in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and up to 37% in Fortnite. This gain comes primarily from the doubled L3 cache, which reduces data access latency — a crucial factor in gaming.
The 5600X is only 3% slower than the 5700X (8 cores) in pure gaming. The two additional cores of the 5700X bring almost nothing in games — it's IPC and cache that matter.
At DSGate, this is the CPU for our most popular configurations: the M9 and the NYXII (5600X + Arc B580, €1090).
For whom? The majority of gamers. It's the best price/performance compromise for the mid-range.
Intel i5-13400F / i5-14400F — The Intel counterpart to the 5600X (~€150-170)
These two CPUs are almost identical — the 14400F is just a refresh with an additional 100 MHz boost (4.7 GHz vs 4.6 GHz). Take whichever you find cheaper.
With 10 cores (6 P-cores + 4 E-cores) and 16 threads, they offer a multitasking advantage over the 5600X while being on par in pure gaming. The LGA 1700 socket allows the use of either DDR4 or DDR5 depending on the motherboard, providing flexibility.
The 13400F/14400F is the ideal choice with the Arc B570, B580, or RTX 3070. It will not bottleneck any of these cards at 1080p or 1440p.
At DSGate, we use it in our configurations with RTX 5060 Ti (i5-14400F + RTX 5060 Ti, €1259).
For whom? Those who want a few more cores than the 5600X for multitasking, or who prefer the Intel platform.
AMD Ryzen 7 5700X — The versatile 8-core (~€170-190)
The Ryzen 7 5700X is the 5600X's bigger brother: 8 cores / 16 threads instead of 6/12, with the same 32 MB L3 cache and a 65W TDP. In pure gaming, it's only 3 to 5% faster than the 5600X — the advantage of additional cores is marginal in games.
Where it shines is in multitasking: streaming while gaming, video editing in the background, encoding, multiple open applications. The 2 additional cores make a real difference in these scenarios.
It's also the best AM4 CPU for high-end graphics cards: RTX 3070, RTX 5060 Ti, and even RTX 5070. With 8 powerful cores, it won't create any bottleneck, even in the most CPU-demanding games.
At DSGate, it powers our high-end DDR4 configuration: the Ryzen 7 5700X + RTX 5060 gaming PC with 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD at €1295.
For whom? Gamers who stream, do intensive multitasking, or want a CPU that won't bottleneck a high-end GPU.
Intel i7-14700K — The high-end DDR4 option (~€320-350)
The i7-14700K is a beast: 20 cores (8 P-cores + 12 E-cores), 28 threads, boost up to 5.6 GHz. It's the most powerful DDR4-compatible CPU in our range.
In gaming, it's about 29% faster than the i5-14400F and performs on par with the best current CPUs. No graphics card will be bottlenecked, not even an RTX 5070 pushed to its limits at 1080p (the resolution where the CPU is most heavily utilized).
Its 253W TDP requires good cooling (a robust tower cooler or at least a 240mm AIO). It's also an energy-hungry CPU, which increases power supply costs.
At DSGate, we reserve it for premium configurations with RTX 5060 Ti or RTX 5070, in the €1300-1600+ range.
For whom? Demanding gamers who want zero compromises, content creators, and those who keep their PC for 5+ years.
DDR5 Platform — Our showcase configurations
AMD Ryzen 5 7600 — The DDR5 entry point (~€189)
The Ryzen 5 7600 is the gateway to DDR5 on the AM5 socket. Zen 4 architecture, 6 cores / 12 threads, 32 MB L3 cache, boost up to 5.1 GHz. In gaming, it performs on par with the 5600X, or even slightly above, thanks to its superior IPC (Zen 4 vs Zen 3).
The main appeal of the 7600 is not raw performance (the gain vs 5600X is modest in gaming), but the AM5 platform: DDR5, PCIe 5.0, and AMD's promise to support the socket until 2027+. It's a future-proof investment.
The downside: the extra cost. The €189 CPU isn't much more expensive than the 5600X, but the AM5 motherboard (minimum B650, ~€130-160) and DDR5 (32 GB ~€140-180) significantly increase the total budget compared to an AM4/DDR4 platform.
At DSGate, we offer it in 3-4 showcase configurations for customers who want to invest in future-proofing.
For whom? Those who want to build an upgradeable platform and accept the additional DDR5 cost.
Intel Core Ultra 225 / 245 (upcoming)
Intel's new Arrow Lake generation is coming to DDR5 with the LGA 1851 socket. We will test them as soon as they are available and update this guide. Stay tuned.

Indicative values. In AAA games, the CPU gap narrows because the GPU becomes the limiting factor. It's in competitive 1080p that the CPU choice matters most.
The bottleneck: how to avoid it
A poor CPU/GPU pairing wastes money. Here are our recommended combos, based on our assembly experience.

Simple rule: dedicate approximately 60-70% of your component budget to the GPU and 15-20% to the CPU. A Ryzen 5 5600X at €150 with an Arc B580 at €300 is better balanced than an i7-14700K at €340 with an RTX 3050 at €200.
AMD vs Intel: which to choose in 2026?
It's the eternal question. Here's our honest answer.
Choose AMD (AM4) if:
- You want the best value for money (5500, 5600X, 5700X are unbeatable)
- You prioritize low power consumption (65W for the entire range)
- You don't need more than 8 cores
- The extra cost of DDR5 doesn't appeal to you for now
Choose Intel (LGA 1700) if:
- You want more than 8 cores (i5-14400F = 10C, i7-14700K = 20C)
- You plan to upgrade to DDR5 later (LGA 1700 supports both)
- You need maximum raw power for multitasking (i7-14700K)
- You prefer the Intel ecosystem (proven compatibility, drivers, stability)
And for DDR5 (AM5):
- The Ryzen 5 7600 is interesting if you want to build a platform for the next 5+ years
- But the total extra cost (CPU + motherboard + RAM) is significant for a modest gaming gain
- It's a future-proofing choice, not an immediate performance choice
DDR4 vs DDR5: the real impact on gaming
We get asked this question all the time. The short answer: in pure gaming, the difference is 5 to 10% in favor of DDR5. This doesn't justify the extra cost for most gamers.
DDR4 (our standard): 16 GB costs around €100-120. AM4 (B550) or LGA 1700 (B660/B760) motherboards are mature and affordable (€80-120). This is the most economical platform.
DDR5 (our showcase configurations): 16 GB costs around €140-180, and AM5 (B650) or LGA 1700 DDR5 motherboards are more expensive (€130-160). The total additional cost is €80-150 for a 5-10% gain in gaming.
Our recommendation: invest the difference in a better GPU rather than in DDR5. A Ryzen 5 5600X + DDR4 + Arc B580 will beat a Ryzen 5 7600 + DDR5 + Arc B570 in all games, despite the "inferior" platform.
Our recommendation by total PC budget
~€730-750 Config → R5 5500 or i5-10500 For RTX 3050 and RTX 2060. The CPU will not be the limiting factor at this GPU level.
~€850-950 Config → R5 5500 or i5-13400F For the Arc B570. The 5500 is sufficient, the 13400F provides a little more headroom for the future.
~€999-1100 Config → R5 5600X or i5-14400F The absolute sweet spot. Whether with the B580 or the RTX 3070, these CPUs exploit 100% of the GPU potential without unnecessary extra cost.
~€1180-1300 Config → R5 5600X, R7 5700X or i5-14400F For RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti. The 5700X adds streaming capabilities. The i5-14400F is the versatile Intel choice.
~€1300-1600+ Config → R7 5700X or i7-14700K For RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5070. Here, the CPU must keep up with a premium GPU. The 5700X remains the best value, the 14700K is the "zero compromise" choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ryzen 5 5500 or 5600X: is it worth €40-50 more? Yes, if your GPU is a B580 or better. The doubled L3 cache (32 MB vs 16 MB) and PCIe 4.0 make a measurable difference of 15 to 37% depending on the game. If your GPU is an RTX 3050, the 5500 is largely sufficient.
i5-13400F or i5-14400F? Take the cheaper one. The difference is 100 MHz in boost, which is about ~1-2% gain. It's invisible in games.
Does the Ryzen 5 5600X bottleneck an RTX 5060 Ti? At 1440p, no. At 1080p in competitive games, it might start to slightly limit the card. For pure competitive 1080p with a 5060 Ti, the 5700X or i7-14700K will be more comfortable.
Do you need aftermarket cooling? For the R5 5500, i5-10500, R5 5600X, and R5 7600: the included cooler is sufficient for standard gaming use. For the R7 5700X: a tower air cooler at ~€25-35 is recommended. For the i7-14700K: a 240mm AIO or a large tower air cooler is essential (253W TDP).
Are 6 cores still enough in 2026? Yes, for pure gaming. The vast majority of games don't intensively use more than 4-6 cores. Where 8 cores become useful is if you're running OBS (streaming), a browser with 30 tabs, Discord, and a game all at the same time.
Is the AM4 platform "dead"? No. AMD has confirmed that AM4 will no longer receive new CPUs, but Ryzen 5000 remains excellent in 2026. It's a mature, stable, and affordable platform. It will remain relevant for at least another 2-3 years for gaming.
