Core i5-12400F vs i5-14400F: which LGA1700 CPU to choose?

On the LGA1700 socket, two Intel processors dominate entry-level and mid-range gaming builds: the Core i5-12400F and the Core i5-14400F. Both lack integrated graphics (the F suffix), and both work with DDR4 on the motherboards we assemble at DSGate. However, they are not based on the same architecture, and the difference becomes most apparent as soon as you multitask.

This comparison details the technical differences, what they change in gaming and daily use, and then proposes a choice based on the associated graphics card.

Architecture: Alder Lake vs. Raptor Lake Refresh

The i5-12400F belongs to the 12th generation (Alder Lake). It offers 6 performance cores and 12 threads, with no efficient cores. The i5-14400F, from the 14th generation (Raptor Lake Refresh), retains those 6 P-cores but adds 4 efficient cores (E-cores), for a total of 10 cores and 16 threads.

Feature Core i5-12400F Core i5-14400F
Generation Alder Lake (12th) Raptor Lake Refresh (14th)
Cores / threads 6 / 12 (6 P) 10 / 16 (6 P + 4 E)
Max turbo frequency (P-cores) up to 4.4 GHz up to 4.7 GHz
L3 Cache 18 MB 20 MB
Socket LGA1700 LGA1700
Memory DDR4 or DDR5 depending on motherboard DDR4 or DDR5 depending on motherboard
Base TDP 65 W 65 W

The values above are the specifications published by Intel. They provide a general scale, not a measurement within your chassis.

What the E-cores change

Efficient cores are not primarily used to gain frames per second in a game: they handle background tasks (browser, Discord, video recording, antivirus) while the P-cores remain dedicated to the game. If you play with multiple applications open, or if you live stream, this advantage is real.

In gaming: the gap mainly depends on the graphics card

In the majority of games at 1080p and 1440p, the 6 P-cores and the slightly higher frequency of the i5-14400F provide a measurable, but modest, lead. It is most apparent in titles that are highly sensitive to the processor, with a powerful graphics card and settings that do not saturate it.

  • With an RTX 5050 or an RTX 5060: the graphics card limits performance before the processor in most cases. The i5-12400F is more than sufficient.
  • With an RTX 5060 Ti or an RTX 5070: the i5-14400F offers more headroom, especially at 1080p with a high refresh rate.
  • Simulation, strategy, and large open-world games: these titles stress the CPU more, making the gap more visible.

We do not provide FPS figures here, as they vary too much depending on the game, resolution, settings, and memory used.

Memory, cooling, and platform

Both processors share the same socket: the motherboard, the CPU cooler, and the DDR4 RAM are therefore interchangeable. This is one of the strengths of the LGA1700 platform with DDR4: it avoids the extra cost of DDR5, the prices of which remain high in 2026.

Regarding temperature, the i5-14400F runs a little hotter under multi-core load due to its 10 cores. With a 65W base TDP, a good tower air cooler or a 240mm water cooler is more than enough for both.

BIOS updates

The i5-12400F is recognized by almost all LGA1700 motherboards. The i5-14400F may require a BIOS update on older boards. At DSGate, this is verified during assembly.

Our recommendation based on your use

Profile Recommended CPU Why
Tight budget, 1080p, RTX 5050/5060 i5-12400F Sufficient, saves budget for the GPU
Gaming + streaming or multitasking i5-14400F E-cores manage the background tasks
RTX 5060 Ti or better i5-14400F Less risk of bottlenecking

For a gaming PC, the rule remains the same: prioritize the graphics card, then a processor that won't hold it back. A well-paired i5-12400F is better than a newer CPU coupled with an underpowered GPU.

Conclusion

The i5-12400F remains a consistent and economical choice. The i5-14400F provides extra cores and a little more headroom for multitasking and more powerful graphics cards. Both work with DDR4 on LGA1700.
