The major structural difference: the 14400F adds 4 efficiency cores (E-cores) to the 6 performance cores, whereas the 12400F sticks to 6 pure P-cores. It also gains 300 MHz of boost and 2 MB of L3 cache.

Gaming performance: a real but moderate gap

In gaming, it's primarily performance cores and frequency that matter. Both chips feature 6 P-cores, and the 300 MHz frequency difference translates into an advantage of around 5 to 10% for the 14400F depending on the title, assuming the graphics card is not the limiting factor.

  • In 1080p with a fast GPU: the 14400F widens the gap in CPU-intensive games (simulation, open-world, competitive at very high framerates).
  • In 1440p and beyond: the graphics card becomes the main bottleneck, and the gap between the two processors significantly reduces.

Specifically, for simultaneous streaming, video editing, or sessions with numerous open applications, the E-cores handle background tasks and leave the P-cores focused on gaming. The 12400F performs well, but the 14400F offers superior headroom that will age better.

Power consumption and cooling

Both chips have a 65W base TDP, but the 14400F can reach 148W peak compared to 117W for the 12400F. A notable common point: on B760 motherboards with DDR4, both processors allow for building a balanced configuration without platform overspending, as DDR4 remains significantly cheaper than DDR5 for the same capacity.
