Undervolt GPU: The Complete Guide to Reduce Heat and Power Consumption

Is your graphics card overheating, with the fans spinning wildly during gameplay, and your PC sounding like a hairdryer? Undervolting is one of the most effective and least risky optimizations available. The principle: reduce the GPU's power voltage while maintaining its frequencies, to achieve the same performance with less heat, less noise, and less power consumption.

In this tutorial, we will undervolt an Nvidia RTX graphics card step-by-step using MSI Afterburner, a free software. The method applies to RTX 5060, 5060 Ti, 5070, and previous generations (RTX 40 and 30), as well as Radeon cards using a different tool.

Why undervolt your graphics card?

Modern GPUs leave the factory with a deliberately generous voltage: this ensures the stability of all manufactured chips, even the less optimal ones. However, most cards can operate at the same frequency with a lower voltage. The concrete benefits:

  • Lower temperatures: often 5 to 12 °C less under load.
  • Silence: fans spin slower, making the PC significantly quieter.
  • Reduced consumption: 10 to 20% fewer watts depending on the card, without noticeable performance loss.
  • Longevity: less heat means less stress on components.

Unlike overclocking, undervolting does not push hardware beyond its specifications. At worst, an overly aggressive setting will cause a game or driver crash: simply revert the changes. No Afterburner setting is permanent unless you apply it on startup.

What you need

  • MSI Afterburner (free, works with all brands of Nvidia cards).
  • A monitoring tool: the RivaTuner overlay included with Afterburner, or HWiNFO64.
  • A load test: a demanding game you know well, or a benchmark like 3DMark or Unigine Superposition.
  • 30 to 60 minutes of patience for stability tests.

Step 1: Identify original frequency and voltage

Launch your game or benchmark and observe, via the overlay, two values during intense load: the GPU frequency (e.g., around 2700 on an RTX 5060) and the voltage (often between 1000 and 1100 mV under load). Note these down: these are your reference values.

Step 2: Open the curve editor in Afterburner

In MSI Afterburner, press Ctrl + F to open the voltage/frequency curve editor. Each point represents a frequency achieved at a given voltage. The goal of undervolting: to achieve your target frequency at a lower voltage than the original.

Step 3: Build the undervolt curve

The simplest method:

  • Choose a reasonable target voltage to start: 950 mV is a good starting point for most RTX cards.
  • On the curve, select the point corresponding to 950 mV and raise it to your target frequency (e.g., the frequency noted in Step 1, or 50 MHz below for more headroom).
  • Flatten the curve after this point: select all points to the right of 950 mV and align them to the same frequency. This ensures the card never exceeds 950 mV.
  • Click the checkmark ✓ to apply.

Tip: Hold Shift and drag to select multiple points at once, then Shift + Enter to align them.

Step 4: Test stability

Run your game or benchmark for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Monitor:

  • Frequency: it should maintain your target value.
  • Temperature: it should have dropped by several degrees.
  • Stability: no crashes, no visual artifacts (colored dots or triangles), no black screens.

If the system is stable, you can try to fine-tune: lower the voltage in 25 mV increments (925 mV, then 900 mV...) re-testing each time. If it crashes, go back up one increment: you've found your limit. Most recent RTX cards hold between 875 and 950 mV at their original frequency.

Step 5: Save the profile

Once the setting is validated across several games, save it to one of Afterburner's 5 profiles (diskette icon then number). Then enable "Apply at Windows startup" and Afterburner's automatic startup so that the undervolt is permanent. In case of issues in a specific game, a click on the reset button instantly restores factory values.

What about AMD Radeon cards?

For AMD, no third-party software is needed: the Adrenalin driver includes undervolting in the Performance → Tuning tab. The automatic "Undervolt GPU" mode already provides good results, and the manual mode allows lowering the maximum voltage in increments, with the same testing logic as above.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Lowering the voltage too quickly: proceed in 25 mV increments, not 100 mV at once.
  • Validating after 5 minutes of testing: some crashes only appear after a long session or in specific games.
  • Touching memory at the same time: only modify one parameter at a time to identify the source of instability.
  • Forgetting that drivers sometimes reset the curve: after a GPU update, verify that your profile is still active.
