Summer is coming, and with it come 28°C rooms and gaming sessions where your PC sounds like a hairdryer. Ambient temperature directly influences your machine's internal temperatures: every degree gained in the room is reflected inside the case. Here's how to optimize your PC's airflow to get through the hot season without throttling or excessive noise.
Understanding airflow: the basics
A well-ventilated case works like a tunnel: cool air enters from one side, passes over hot components, and exits from the other. The classic — and in the vast majority of cases, most effective — setup is as follows:
- Intake: front fans and possibly bottom fans, which draw in cool room air.
- Exhaust: one fan at the rear and one to two at the top of the case, which expel warm air. Since hot air naturally rises, the top of the case is the most logical exhaust location.
Positive or negative pressure?
We speak of positive pressure when the incoming airflow exceeds the outgoing airflow, and negative pressure in the opposite case. Slightly positive pressure is generally preferable: air enters through filtered fans rather than through unfiltered gaps in the case, which limits dust accumulation. In practice: three intake fans for two exhaust fans is a good starting point.
Step 1: Assess your temperatures
Before changing anything, measure. Download HWiNFO64 (free) and note the following temperatures after 30 minutes of gaming:
- CPU: Below 80°C under load, all is well. Between 80 and 90°C, there's room for improvement. Above 90°C, the processor reduces its frequencies (throttling) and you lose performance.
- GPU: Below 75°C, excellent. Between 75 and 83°C, acceptable. Above that, the card also throttles. Also monitor the hot spot, which can exceed the average temperature by 10 to 15°C — this is normal, but it should remain below 100°C.
- NVMe SSD: Preferably below 70°C. SSDs slow down significantly when they get too hot.
Step 2: The big clean-up
This is the most cost-effective operation you can do, and it's free. Dust acts as a thermal insulator and clogs filters.
- Turn off the PC and unplug it completely.
- Take it to a well-ventilated area (balcony, garage) — avoid blowing dust into your room.
- Remove dust filters and wash them with lukewarm water. Dry them completely before putting them back.
- Dust fans and radiators with a can of compressed air, blocking the blades with a finger to prevent them from spinning freely (bad for bearings).
- Pay close attention to the CPU cooler's radiator and the GPU's fins, where dust tends to compact.
Cleaning every three to six months is sufficient in a normal room; every two months if you have pets or carpeting.
Step 3: Optimize fan placement
Some golden rules for mounting:
- Identify the direction of flow: air exits from the side where the frame reinforcements (the protective grille) are located. An arrow molded on the edge often indicates the direction.
- Front = intake, rear/top = exhaust. Do not mount a front fan as exhaust; you would break the air tunnel.
- Don't saturate the case: beyond six fans, the gain becomes marginal. Three good, well-placed fans are better than seven haphazardly placed ones.
- Let the front breathe: a closed desk or a wall 5 cm from the front chokes off the intake. Leave at least 15 cm of free space in front of and behind the case.
Step 4: Adjust fan curves
Fans don't need to run at full speed constantly. In the BIOS/UEFI (Delete or F2 key on startup), in the Q-Fan, Smart Fan, or Fan Control section, depending on the brand:
- Below 50°C CPU: 30 to 40% speed — almost total silence at idle.
- From 50 to 70°C: gradual increase from 40 to 70%.
- Above 75°C: 80 to 100% to absorb summer peaks.
Set case fans based on CPU temperature or, better yet if your motherboard allows it, based on GPU temperature for fans near the graphics card.
Step 5: Bonus optimizations
Cable management
Loose cables in front of fans disrupt airflow. Route cables behind the motherboard tray, use the case's Velcro ties, and clear the area between the front and the graphics card.
GPU undervolting

The room itself
Keep blinds closed during hot hours, keep the PC away from sunny windows, and if possible, game in the evening rather than at 3 PM during a heatwave. A room fan pointed at the front of the PC can also shave off a few degrees in very hot weather.
