Clean Install Windows 11: The Complete 2026 Guide

A clean installation of Windows 11 guarantees a fast, stable system free from accumulated unnecessary software. Whether you've just built a PC, replaced an SSD, or your current machine is showing signs of slowing down, reinstalling the system from scratch remains the most effective method to start fresh. This guide will walk you through each step, from creating the USB drive to the initial settings after installation.

Before You Begin: Prerequisites

A clean installation erases all content on the system drive. The first step is to back up your important data: documents, photos, game saves not synchronized in the cloud, passwords, and browser favorites. An external drive or cloud service will suffice.

  • A USB drive of at least 8 GB (its content will be erased)
  • A second functional PC to prepare the drive (or the current PC before formatting)
  • Your Windows license: if Windows was already activated on the machine, the digital license will automatically reactivate after reinstallation
  • An internet connection, now required by the Windows 11 installer

Hardware-wise, Windows 11 officially requires a recent 64-bit processor, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI with Secure Boot, and a TPM 2.0 chip. All PCs assembled in recent years, including DSGate configurations, meet these conditions without special manipulation.

Step 1: Create the USB Installation Drive

Microsoft provides a free official tool, the Media Creation Tool, downloadable from the "Download Windows 11" page on microsoft.com. Launch it, accept the terms, choose the language and edition, then select "USB flash drive." The tool downloads the system image and prepares the drive automatically, taking about twenty minutes depending on your connection.

The Rufus Alternative

Advanced users may prefer Rufus, a free utility that burns the official ISO image to a USB drive. Its advantage: it offers additional options, such as creating a local account during installation or disabling certain configuration questions. In this case, download the Windows 11 ISO from the Microsoft website, then select it in Rufus with your USB drive as the destination.

Step 2: Boot from the USB Drive

Plug the drive into the PC to be installed, preferably into a USB port at the back of the motherboard. Turn on the machine and open the boot menu by tapping the dedicated key as soon as the logo screen appears:

  • F11 or F8 on most MSI and ASRock motherboards
  • F12 on Gigabyte
  • F8 on ASUS
  • Otherwise, enter the BIOS with Del and place the USB drive in the first boot position

Select the line mentioning "UEFI" followed by your drive's name. The Windows 11 installer will then launch on a blue background.

Step 3: The Actual Installation

Choose your language and French keyboard, then click "Install now." If Windows asks for a product key and your machine already had one, click "I don't have a product key": activation will happen automatically once connected to the internet.

The Crucial Point: Partitions

Select custom installation (not upgrade). You will arrive at the partition screen, the most important step for a truly clean installation:

  • Identify the destination disk (check its capacity to avoid mistakes)
  • Delete all partitions on that disk: primary partition, recovery partition, EFI system partition
  • Select the remaining unallocated space and click "Next"

Windows will recreate the necessary partitions itself with optimal alignment. If you have multiple disks, do not touch the others: only the system disk needs to be cleaned.

File copying then takes between 5 and 15 minutes on an NVMe SSD, with one or two automatic reboots. Do not remove the drive until the setup screen appears.

Step 4: Initial Configuration

Windows 11 follows a series of questions: region, keyboard, network, then Microsoft account. Take the time to read the privacy screens and disable options you don't use (location, personalized advertising, optional diagnostic data). You can decline Microsoft 365, Game Pass, and OneDrive offers presented at the end – they will remain available later if needed.

Step 5: Drivers and Updates

Once on the desktop, three steps are necessary, in this order:

  • Windows Update: Settings > Windows Update, search and install everything, including optional driver updates. Restart, then repeat until there's nothing left.
  • Chipset drivers: go to the AMD or Intel website depending on your platform and install the corresponding chipset driver for your motherboard. This is particularly important on AMD platforms for proper processor core management.
  • Graphics driver: download the latest driver from the Nvidia (Nvidia application) or AMD (Adrenalin) website. The generic driver installed by Windows is not sufficient for optimal gaming performance.

Step 6: Useful Settings for Gaming

A few minutes of configuration significantly improve the daily experience:

  • Activate Game Mode in Settings > Gaming
  • Verify that Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling is enabled in graphics settings
  • Set the power mode to "High Performance"
  • Uninstall pre-installed applications you won't use from Settings > Apps
  • Enable your screen's maximum refresh rate in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings — a setting often forgotten on 144 Hz and higher monitors

What if the Installation Gets Stuck?

The most common blockages have simple solutions. If the USB drive doesn't appear at boot, verify that it was created in UEFI/GPT mode and try another port. If the installer refuses to start due to TPM or Secure Boot, enable these options in the BIOS (often in "Security" or "Boot" menus). Finally, if the disk is not detected on a recent Intel platform, load the storage driver provided by the motherboard manufacturer or disable VMD mode in the BIOS.

In Summary

Official USB drive, complete deletion of system disk partitions, updated chipset and graphics drivers: these are the three pillars of a successful Windows 11 installation. Allow approximately one hour in total, including reboots and updates, to restore a responsive and healthy system.

And if you prefer to avoid this step, DSGate gaming PCs come with Windows 11 cleanly installed, activated, and up to date, including drivers: assembled in France, they are ready to play right out of the box.
