SSD NVMe vs SATA: Which Storage to Choose for Your Gaming PC in 2026?

 


SSDs have become essential in a gaming PC. No one installs Windows or their games on a mechanical hard drive in 2026 anymore—loading times would be unbearable. But between a SATA SSD and an NVMe SSD, which one should you choose? And does it really make a difference for gaming?

At DSGate, all our PCs are equipped with NVMe SSDs. We're going to explain why—and more importantly, how much of a difference it makes (or doesn't make) in games.

SATA SSD vs. NVMe SSD: The difference in 30 seconds

Both are SSDs (Solid State Drives)—no mechanical parts, no noise, no vibration. The difference lies in the communication interface with the rest of the PC.

SATA SSDs use the Serial ATA interface, originally designed for mechanical hard drives. They connect in a 2.5-inch format (SATA cable + power cable) or M.2 SATA (small card format). Their theoretical maximum speed is 600 MB/s, and in practice, the best models top out at 550 MB/s in reading.

NVMe SSDs use the NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) protocol via the PCIe bus, the same ultrafast bus as your graphics card. They plug directly into the motherboard in M.2 format—no cables. Their speed depends on the PCIe generation: up to 3,500 MB/s for PCIe 3.0, 7,000 MB/s for PCIe 4.0, and over 10,000 MB/s for PCIe 5.0.

In summary: a PCIe 3.0 NVMe is already 6 times faster than a SATA. A PCIe 4.0 NVMe is 12 times faster.

NVMe and SATA prices have converged significantly. In 2026, the difference is often only €10-20 for an equivalent capacity. This is why SATA is losing its appeal: why pay almost the same price for 6 times less throughput?

The real impact on gaming: FPS, loading times, and stutters

This is the key question. And the answer is nuanced.

FPS: no difference

Storage has no impact on FPS. Zero. Whether you have a SATA at 550 MB/s or an NVMe at 7,000 MB/s, your frame rate will be identical. FPS depend on the GPU, CPU, and RAM—not the SSD.

If someone tells you an NVMe gives you more FPS, they're wrong.

Loading times: 10-20% NVMe gain

This is where NVMe makes a difference. Game loading times are reduced by 10 to 20% on average compared to a SATA. For a game that takes 30 seconds to load on SATA, you'll see 24-27 seconds on NVMe. It's noticeable, but it's not revolutionary.

Some games with very long loading times (like Star Citizen or massive open worlds) benefit more from NVMe. For competitive games that load in 5-10 seconds anyway (Valorant, CS2), the difference is insignificant.

Asset streaming: the true future advantage

This is where NVMe makes perfect sense in the medium term. Modern games increasingly use "asset streaming": instead of loading everything in advance, the game loads textures, 3D models, and environments in real-time as you play.

When the SSD can't keep up, you see "pop-in"—blurry textures that become sharp after a delay, objects that appear abruptly. An NVMe significantly reduces this phenomenon thanks to its much higher IOPS (operations per second).

Microsoft's DirectStorage technology pushes this logic even further: it allows the GPU to decompress data directly from the SSD, without going through the CPU. For DirectStorage to work at its full potential, an NVMe is essential. And the first DirectStorage-optimized games are coming in 2026.

Windows boot and system responsiveness

Windows boots faster on NVMe: about 8-12 seconds compared to 15-25 seconds on SATA. Opening applications, navigating the system, everything is a little more responsive. It's not spectacular, but it's a daily comfort you won't want to lose.

512 GB or 1 TB: what capacity?

Modern games are getting heavier and heavier. A few examples of installation sizes in 2026: Call of Duty Modern Warfare III takes about 150 GB, Cyberpunk 2077 with its DLC about 80 GB, Fortnite about 40 GB, and GTA 6 is expected to exceed 150 GB.

With a 512 GB SSD, you can install Windows (~30 GB) plus 4-6 large games. This is sufficient if you primarily play 2-3 titles and uninstall those you no longer touch.

With 1 TB, you have comfortable headroom: Windows + 8-12 large games without having to juggle. That's convenience.

Our DSGate tip: the free 500 GB HDD

For all our configurations with 256 GB or 512 GB SSDs, we include a free 500 GB hard drive. The idea: the NVMe SSD for Windows and your main games (where loading times matter), and the HDD for mass storage—secondary games, files, videos, backups.

It's a pragmatic solution that avoids paying the price of a 1 TB SSD while still having enough space. And if a game on the HDD loads too slowly, simply move it to the SSD.

PCIe 3.0 vs. PCIe 4.0 vs. PCIe 5.0: which one to choose?

For gaming, a PCIe 3.0 NVMe is perfectly sufficient. The difference in loading times between a PCIe 3.0 (3,500 MB/s) and a PCIe 4.0 (7,000 MB/s) is marginal in games—a few seconds at most.

PCIe 4.0 offers a real gain for large file transfers (game copying, video editing), but not for everyday gaming.

PCIe 5.0 is the absolute high-end (10,000+ MB/s) but prices remain high, SSDs heat up a lot (heatsink required), and no games exploit this bandwidth in 2026. It's pure future-proofing.

Our recommendation: a PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 NVMe is largely sufficient. Don't invest in PCIe 5.0 for gaming.

Compatibility: check your motherboard

Before buying an NVMe SSD, make sure your motherboard has an M.2 slot with NVMe support. Beware of traps:

Some older motherboards have an M.2 slot that only supports SATA (not NVMe). Others share PCIe lanes between the M.2 slot and SATA ports—plugging in an NVMe can disable some SATA ports. The AM4 (B550) and LGA 1700 (B660/B760) motherboards we use at DSGate all have at least one compatible NVMe M.2 slot.

On AM4 platforms with Ryzen 5 5500: beware, this CPU only supports PCIe 3.0. A PCIe 4.0 SSD will work, but its speed will be capped at PCIe 3.0. This is not a problem for gaming (the difference is negligible), but keep it in mind.

What we do at DSGate

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an NVMe give more FPS? No. Storage does not affect FPS. It only affects loading times and the fluidity of in-game asset streaming (texture pop-in).

SATA or NVMe for a tight budget? NVMe. The price difference has become so small (10-20€) that SATA no longer has a reason to be primary storage for a new PC. SATA remains relevant only as secondary storage if you have an old 2.5" SSD to reuse.

Is 512 GB enough in 2026? Yes, if you manage your space (2-4 large games installed at a time). With our free 500 GB HDD, you have room for the rest. But if the budget allows, 1 TB is more comfortable.

Does a PCIe 4.0 NVMe load games faster than a PCIe 3.0? Barely. The difference is 1-3 seconds on most games. PCIe 3.0 is largely sufficient for gaming in 2026.

Do SSDs have a limited lifespan? Yes, but it's largely sufficient for gaming use. A 1 TB NVMe SSD with an endurance of 600 TBW (terabytes written) will last 10+ years with normal use. You'll change your PC long before the SSD wears out.

What is DirectStorage? It's a Microsoft technology that allows the GPU to directly read data from the SSD without going through the CPU. This drastically reduces loading times and pop-in. To benefit from it, an NVMe is required. The first optimized games are coming in 2026.
