Dual channel vs single channel RAM: what real impact in gaming in 2026?

It's one of the most frequent configuration errors on home-built PCs: a single RAM stick installed, or two sticks placed in the wrong slots. The result: the system runs in single channel and leaves some performance on the table, sometimes without the user even realizing it. We're taking a look at what dual channel really changes, with supporting figures.

What exactly is dual channel?

Your processor's memory controller communicates with the RAM via channels. With a single stick, only one channel is used. With two sticks correctly installed, the controller accesses both modules in parallel: theoretical memory bandwidth doubles.

An important nuance for DDR5: each stick integrates two 32-bit sub-channels. A single DDR5 stick therefore performs slightly better than a single DDR4, but this does not replace true dual channel with two physical modules.

What it changes in-game

With a dedicated graphics card

When the GPU does most of the work (1440p, 4K, Ultra settings), the impact of single channel remains moderate. But as soon as the processor becomes the limiting factor — low resolutions, competitive games at high frame rates, open worlds filled with NPCs — memory bandwidth becomes critical. In these scenarios, switching to dual channel significantly improves average fluidity and especially 1% lows, those occasional drops that give a feeling of stuttering even when the average seems correct.

With an integrated GPU (iGPU): the critical case

On a machine without a dedicated graphics card — like our configurations based on a Ryzen 5 5600GT and its Radeon Vega 7 iGPU — system memory also serves as video memory. The iGPU does not have dedicated VRAM: its performance directly depends on RAM bandwidth. In single channel, an iGPU can lose a very significant portion of its capabilities. This is a use case where dual channel is not an optimization, but a necessity.

2 × 8 GB or 1 × 16 GB: the classic trap

For the same capacity, two 8 GB sticks outperform a single 16 GB stick in most uses, thanks to dual channel. The argument often made for the single stick — "I'm keeping slots free for later" — is debatable: adding a second different stick months later exposes you to compatibility problems with frequencies and timings. Two identical modules from the outset remain the safest choice.

  • Typical gaming config: 2 × 8 GB DDR4 or 2 × 16 GB for multitasking and streaming-oriented configurations.
  • Slots to use on a 4-slot motherboard: A2 and B2 (the 2nd and 4th from the CPU), unless otherwise indicated in the motherboard manual.
  • Identical sticks: same capacity, same frequency, same timings — ideally the same kit.

How to check your current configuration

No need to open the case. Two quick methods on Windows 11:

  • Task Manager: Performance tab → Memory. The "Slots used" line indicates the number of sticks detected.
  • CPU-Z (free): Memory tab, "Channel #" field. If it displays "Single" when two sticks are installed, they are probably in the wrong slots.

If you find single channel with two sticks installed, shut down the PC, move one stick to match the A2/B2 scheme, and recheck. It's five minutes of manipulation for a free gain.

What about in 2026, with current RAM prices?

The surge in memory prices changes the game a bit for upgrades. In DDR4, 2 × 8 GB and 2 × 16 GB kits remain affordable: if you are on single channel on an AM4 or LGA1700 platform, completing or replacing with a dual channel kit remains one of the best gain/price ratios at the moment. In DDR5, current prices rather encourage patience if your configuration is already running in dual channel.
