DDR4 or DDR5? This debate has been raging on PC forums for three years – and in 2026, with memory prices on the rise, the question is more relevant than ever. At DSGate, we build PCs with both technologies. Our range is primarily DDR4, with a few showcase configurations using DDR5. This isn't by chance: it's a well-thought-out choice, based on the numbers.
We're going to show you exactly what DDR5 brings to gaming, how much it really costs, and in which cases it's worth the extra expense.
DDR4 vs DDR5: Technical differences in 30 seconds
DDR5 isn't just "faster DDR4." It's a different architecture.
DDR4 operates with a single 64-bit channel per stick, at frequencies from 2666 to 3600 MHz for consumers. It runs at 1.2V and offers low latencies (CL14 to CL18 on good kits). It's a mature, stable, and affordable technology.
DDR5 uses two independent 32-bit channels per stick, which improves access efficiency. Frequencies start at 4800 MHz, and the gaming sweet spot is around 6000 MHz. It runs at 1.1V (more power-efficient) but with higher latencies (CL30 to CL40). It also includes on-die ECC for greater stability.
On paper, DDR5 offers up to twice the bandwidth. But raw bandwidth doesn't directly translate to FPS. That's where benchmarks become interesting.
What gaming benchmarks say in 2026
The latest tests (TechSpot, Tom's Hardware, Hardware Unboxed) provide a clear picture.
In 1080p — where CPU and RAM matter most:
The DDR5 vs DDR4 gap is most noticeable at 1080p because the GPU isn't the limiting factor. TechSpot tests on an i5-12400F show a DDR5 gain of 4% in average FPS and up to 10% on 1% lows, averaged across 22 games. But some recent titles show much larger gaps: Marvel Rivals displays 33% more with DDR5-6000 compared to DDR4-3200. Other games like Rainbow Six Siege show only a 7% difference.
The realistic average at 1080p is between 5 and 15% gain with DDR5, depending on the game and CPU.
In 1440p — the GPU takes over:
At 1440p, the GPU becomes the primary limiting factor. The DDR4 vs DDR5 gap drops to an average of less than 5% in average FPS. Linus Tech Tips tests confirm that average FPS are almost identical between the two, with a DDR5 advantage visible only on 1% lows (around 10% better in stability).
In 4K — no measurable difference:
In 4K, the GPU does all the work. The DDR4 vs DDR5 difference is 0 to 2%, which is within the margin of error. Upgrading to DDR5 for 4K gaming makes no sense from a performance perspective.

What to remember: DDR5 mainly helps at 1080p in CPU-bound games. But the majority of our DSGate customers aim for high 1080p or 1440p — and at these resolutions, with a mid-range GPU like an Arc B580 or an RTX 3070, the GPU determines the FPS, not the RAM.
The real cost of DDR5 in 2026
Here's the core of the matter. DDR5 isn't just a RAM upgrade — it's a complete platform change.

The real extra cost
Switching to DDR5 costs on average €80 to €120 more than DDR4, including RAM and motherboard. And if you're aiming for 32 GB (2x16 GB) in DDR5, the kit alone can exceed €250-300.
This extra cost of €80-120 represents exactly the difference between an RTX 3050 and an Arc B570, or between an Arc B570 and an Arc B580. In other words: the money invested in DDR5 would have a much more noticeable impact if it went into a better GPU.
When DDR5 is worth the extra cost
DDR5 isn't useless — it has legitimate use cases.
You are building a future-proof new PC. If you don't have an existing platform and want a PC that will last 5+ years, DDR5 on AM5 (Ryzen 7600) is an investment in the future. AMD has confirmed AM5 support until 2027+, which means you'll be able to upgrade your CPU without changing platforms. On AM4, there will be no new processors.
You primarily play competitive 1080p. This is where DDR5 makes the biggest difference. If you're a Valorant, CS2, or Fortnite player aiming for 240+ FPS on a 240 Hz monitor, every percent counts, and DDR5-6000 brings a measurable gain.
You do content creation. 4K video editing, 3D rendering, and multithreaded workloads benefit from DDR5's superior bandwidth much more than gaming.
You have the budget. If your total PC budget exceeds €1500 and your GPU is already an RTX 5060 Ti or better, investing in DDR5 makes sense because your GPU won't be the limiting factor.
When DDR4 remains the best choice
Your PC budget is under €1200. This is the case for the majority of our DSGate customers. At this budget, every euro invested in the GPU has more impact than DDR5. A Ryzen 5 5600X + DDR4 + Arc B580 will beat a Ryzen 5 7600 + DDR5 + Arc B570 in all games.
You play at 1440p or higher. The DDR4 vs DDR5 gap shrinks at 1440p. If your monitor is 1440p (which is becoming standard), DDR5 will bring you almost no FPS benefit.
You are upgrading an existing AM4 PC. Adding DDR4 to an AM4 PC costs €100-120. Upgrading to DDR5 means new CPU + new motherboard + new RAM = €400-500. The DDR4 upgrade is infinitely more cost-effective.
You want to maximize your GPU. A more powerful GPU always has more impact on FPS than faster RAM. It's mathematical.

Our range is built around DDR4 for a simple reason: for an equivalent budget, a DSGate PC with DDR4 and a better GPU offers more FPS than a DDR5 PC with a lower-tier GPU.
Our configurations between €730 and €1100 use DDR4-3200 or 3600, on AM4 (B550) and LGA 1700 (B660/B760) platforms. XMP/DOCP is enabled on every machine before shipping.
Our few showcase DDR5 configurations use the Ryzen 5 7600 on AM5 with DDR5-5200/5600. They are intended for customers who explicitly want to invest in future-proofing and have the budget for it.
We don't force DDR5 — we offer it when it makes sense. And for the majority of gamers in 2026, DDR4 remains the smartest choice.
Will DDR4 become obsolete?
This is the big concern. The answer: not for at least 2-3 years.
DDR4 platforms (AM4, LGA 1200, LGA 1700 DDR4) no longer receive new CPUs, that's true. But existing CPUs (Ryzen 5000, Intel 12th/13th/14th gen) remain perfectly capable for gaming in 2026 and beyond.
DDR4 won't "stop working." Your games won't suddenly require DDR5. What's happening is a gradual transition: new platforms are DDR5-only (AM5, LGA 1851), but older ones will continue to run without issue.
The real risk: DDR4 prices could increase further if manufacturers reduce production (Micron has already announced the gradual end of its DDR4 production). But for now, kits are still available, and prices, while rising, remain lower than DDR5.
Frequency and timings: The detail that matters
If you stick with DDR4, optimize what you have.
On AMD AM4 (Ryzen 5000): DDR4-3600 CL16 is the absolute sweet spot. The Infinity Fabric bus of these CPUs ideally runs at 1800 MHz (= 3600/2). DDR4-3200 CL16 is the recommended minimum; the gain from 3600 is about 3-5%.
On Intel LGA 1200 (i5-10500): DDR4-2666 is the natively supported maximum. DDR4-3200 works, but the gain is marginal on this platform.
On Intel LGA 1700 (i5-13400F/14400F, i7-14700K): DDR4-3200 CL16 is the standard. 3600 provides a small bonus. Beyond that, gains are negligible.
If you switch to DDR5 (AM5): DDR5-6000 CL30 is the sweet spot for Ryzen 7000. The Infinity Fabric bus operates at 1:1 at 3000 MHz (= 6000/2). Beyond 6000 MHz, the bus switches to 1:2, and gains become marginal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DDR5 really give more FPS? At 1080p, yes: 5-15% on average, sometimes more in CPU-bound games. At 1440p and above, the gap shrinks to 0-5%. It's not nothing, but it's not revolutionary either.
Can I put DDR5 on a DDR4 motherboard? No. The two are physically and electrically incompatible. The connector is different (the notch is offset). Upgrading to DDR5 requires a new motherboard (and often a new CPU).
DDR4-3600 CL16 or DDR5-6000 CL30: which is "faster"? In pure latency, they are very close (about 8.9 ns for DDR4 vs 10 ns for DDR5). But DDR5 has double the bandwidth, which compensates in heavy workloads. In gaming, performance is often similar — that's why the FPS gap is modest.
I'm buying a new PC: DDR4 or DDR5? If your total budget is under €1200, DDR4 will give you a better PC (GPU + CPU) for the price. Above €1500, DDR5 becomes a logical investment for future-proofing.
Will DDR4 disappear from stores? Not yet. Manufacturers have slowed production, but DDR4 remains available. Prices have increased in 2026 due to AI demand for memory, but kits are still in stock at most retailers.
Why does DSGate mostly offer DDR4? Because for an equivalent budget, a DDR4 PC with a better GPU offers more FPS than a DDR5 PC with a lower-tier GPU. We prefer our customers to get 20-30% more FPS thanks to a better GPU rather than 5-10% thanks to faster RAM. It's common sense.
