In 2026, the question constantly arises when building or upgrading a machine: should you go with DDR4 or DDR5? The answer depends more on your platform and budget than on a simple number on the box. DDR4 and DDR5: What are the technical differences?

DDR5 is the latest generation of RAM. It brings several improvements compared to DDR4: higher operating frequencies, higher bandwidth, slightly lower operating voltage, and integrated power management directly on the module. Specifically, a DDR5 module can transfer more data per cycle, which benefits memory-intensive applications.

DDR4, on the other hand, is a mature, proven, and widely available technology. It remains perfectly suitable for most uses, from gaming to office work and light content creation. Its main asset today: an excellent capacity/price ratio, especially for budget-conscious configurations.

The most important point: socket compatibility

This is the rule to remember above all else: DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. The notches on the modules are different, and each motherboard only accepts one type of memory. Your choice is therefore determined by the platform (processor + motherboard) you select.

  • AMD AM5 (Ryzen 7000 and newer, such as the Ryzen 7 7700X): DDR5 mandatory. This platform only supports DDR5.
  • AMD AM4 (Ryzen 5000 and older, such as Ryzen 5 5500, 5600GT or Ryzen 7 5700X): DDR4 only.

Before purchasing RAM, first identify your socket and the type of memory supported by your motherboard. This point, not raw performance, settles the question in 90% of cases.

What's the real difference in gaming?

On paper, DDR5 shows more impressive figures. In games, the difference largely depends on the rest of the configuration. When the graphics card is the limiting factor, which often happens at 1440p and 4K, the difference between DDR4 and DDR5 remains moderate. At 1080p with a high-end processor, or in games highly dependent on the processor (simulation, management, large open-world games), DDR5 can create a more noticeable gap.

Beyond pure gaming, DDR5 has an advantage in memory-intensive tasks: video editing, compilation, virtualization, or intensive multitasking with many tabs and applications open simultaneously.

Frequency and timings: what you need to know

A memory module is not only defined by its capacity. Frequency and timings (latency) also play a role. Generally, on AM5, a well-chosen DDR5 offers a good balance of frequency/latency for gaming. On AM4, a DDR4 with correct frequency and controlled timings remains a very solid choice. Also remember to activate the memory profile in the BIOS (EXPO for AMD, XMP for Intel) so that the RAM runs at its advertised frequency rather than the default value.

How much RAM in 2026?

Regardless of the generation, capacity remains a key criterion.

  • 16 GB: The comfortable minimum for gaming today. Sufficient for most titles in a controlled configuration.
  • 32 GB: The recommended choice for those who want headroom, play demanding titles, or do a bit of content creation and multitasking.
  • 64 GB and more: Reserved for heavy creative uses and production.

Always prioritize dual channel operation (two modules rather than a single one): memory bandwidth benefits significantly, and the gain is real in games.

So, DDR4 or DDR5?

The right approach is not to choose the RAM first, but the platform. If you're building a recent configuration on AM5, DDR5 is naturally required.
