This is THE question we get asked most often at DSGate right now. And it's even more important in 2026 as RAM prices have skyrocketed: a 16GB DDR4 kit now costs around €100-120, and a 32GB kit is around €180-220. When every euro counts in a gaming PC budget, choosing the right amount of RAM can make the difference between a good graphics card and an average one.
We're going to give you an honest answer, with facts and figures.
The Short Answer
16GB of DDR4 RAM is sufficient for gaming in the vast majority of games in 2026. It's the current standard, and what Fortnite, Valorant, Call of Duty Warzone, and most popular titles recommend.
32GB becomes a real plus if you play recent big AAA titles (Cyberpunk 2077, Star Citizen, Microsoft Flight Simulator), if you do intensive multitasking (gaming + streaming + browser), or if you want a comfortable PC for the next 3-4 years.
Now, let's get into the details.
What Benchmarks Say
Tests conducted by independent sources in 2026 show a clear and nuanced picture.
Average FPS changes very little. For most games, going from 16GB to 32GB provides between 0 and 5% gain in average FPS. On Call of Duty, for example, NoobFeed tests show 149 FPS with 16GB versus 156 FPS with 32GB at 1080p — a barely perceptible difference. On Cyberpunk 2077, the difference drops to 1 FPS.
Where 32GB makes a difference is in stability. The famous "1% low" and "0.1% low" — which are moments where FPS brutally drop — are significantly better with 32GB. Tests show about 15 FPS better in 0.2% low on some titles. In practice, this translates to fewer micro-stutters, fewer split-second freezes during busy scenes.
Why this difference? When RAM is full (and 16GB fills up quickly with Windows 11 + game + Discord + browser), the system offloads data to the SSD via the pagefile. Even a fast NVMe SSD is infinitely slower than RAM. This is what causes micro-stutters.
How Much RAM Do Games Really Consume in 2026?
To understand if 16GB is enough, we need to look at actual consumption.
Windows 11 at idle consumes about 4-5GB of RAM. Add Discord (300-500MB), a browser with a few tabs (1-3GB), Spotify (200-300MB), and you're already at 6-8GB before even launching a game.
Competitive games are light on RAM: Fortnite uses about 4-6GB, Valorant 3-5GB, CS2 4-6GB. With 16GB, you have comfortable headroom.
Recent AAA titles are much more demanding: Cyberpunk 2077 can use 10-14GB at high settings, Black Myth Wukong 8-12GB, and Star Citizen officially recommends 32GB. When the game consumes 12GB and your system is already using 5-6GB, 16GB is saturated.
The future looks even more demanding. GTA 6 on PC is likely to require a lot of RAM, and Unreal Engine 5 games with Nanite and Lumen are consuming more and more memory for asset streaming.
The Real Calculation: 16GB or 32GB in Your Budget?
This is where it gets interesting. Because the €80-100 difference between 16GB and 32GB of DDR4 is also money that could go into a better GPU.
Scenario 1: Tight Budget (~€750-950) With a limited budget, every euro counts. €100 invested in a better GPU (e.g., upgrading from an RTX 3050 to an Arc B570) will have a much more visible impact on your FPS than €100 of additional RAM. At this budget, stick with 16GB without hesitation.
Scenario 2: Mid-Range Budget (~€1000-1100) This is where the question really arises. If your GPU is already an Arc B580 or an RTX 3070, going from 16GB to 32GB can bring real comfort, especially if you play AAA titles or multitask. But if the extra cost prevents you from getting a better CPU (e.g., 5600X instead of 5500), the CPU remains a priority.
Scenario 3: Comfortable Budget (~€1200+) At this level, 32GB is recommended. Your GPU and CPU are powerful enough that RAM becomes the next comfort factor. And with RTX 5060 / RTX 5060 Ti configurations, you want everything else to keep up.
16GB or 32GB: What We Do at DSGate
At DSGate, the majority of our gaming configurations come with 16GB of DDR4. This is a deliberate choice: we prefer to put the budget where it has the most impact — in the GPU and CPU — rather than inflating RAM at the expense of actual in-game performance.
Our Ryzen 7 5700X + RTX 5060 configuration at €1295 comes with 32GB, because at this price point and GPU level, it's consistent, and the customer gets the most out of their machine.
For our configurations between €750 and €1100, 16GB is the standard. And for customers who want to upgrade to 32GB, we offer it as an option — it's a simple upgrade that can also be done after purchase.
Frequency and Timings Also Matter
Quantity isn't everything. RAM speed has a measurable impact on performance, especially on AMD Ryzen CPUs.
DDR4-3200 CL16 is the recommended minimum. This is the standard you'll find in most kits in 2026.
DDR4-3600 CL16 is the sweet spot for Ryzen 5000 (5500, 5600X, 5700X). The technical reason: on these CPUs, the Infinity Fabric bus operates optimally at 1800 MHz, which is exactly half of 3600 MHz. The gain is 3-5% in gaming compared to DDR4-3200.
Beyond 3600 MHz, gains become marginal, and stability can be an issue. It's not a cost-effective investment.
Dual Channel is mandatory. Always install RAM in 2 sticks (2x8GB or 2x16GB), never in a single stick. Dual channel doubles bandwidth and can provide 10-20% more FPS compared to a single module, especially on AMD CPUs.
XMP Profile: Don't Forget It!
One point many gamers overlook: by default, your DDR4-3200 or 3600 RAM runs at... 2133 MHz. This is the base speed of the DDR4 standard.
To take advantage of your kit's actual speed, you need to enable the XMP (Intel) or DOCP (AMD) profile in the BIOS. This is a one-click setting that unlocks the advertised performance. Without it, you're losing FPS for nothing.

RAM Price Increase in 2026: What You Need to Know
DDR4 (and DDR5) prices have risen sharply since early 2026. The reason: massive demand for memory for AI data centers, combined with supply that isn't keeping up. Manufacturers (Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron) are prioritizing the production of HBM memory for AI GPUs, to the detriment of consumer DDR4/DDR5.
In practice, a 16GB DDR4-3200 kit that cost €40-50 a year ago now sells for €100-120. And 32GB has gone from €70-80 to €180-220.
This is another reason not to oversize your RAM if the budget is tight. It's better to have 16GB today + a good GPU, with the option to add 16GB later when prices calm down.
Future Upgrade: Easy and Economical
The advantage of RAM is that it's the easiest component to upgrade. Unlike the CPU or GPU, which sometimes require changing the motherboard, adding RAM takes 2 minutes: open the PC, clip in the sticks, and you're done.
If your motherboard has 4 RAM slots (which is the case for most B550 and B760 boards we use at DSGate), you can start with 2x8GB and add 2x8GB later. Just make sure to buy the same model or a kit with the same specs (frequency, timings) for optimal compatibility.
If your motherboard only has 2 slots, you'll need to replace your 2x8GB with a 2x16GB kit.
Our Final Recommendation
Competitive Gamers (Fortnite, Valorant, CS2, LoL, Apex): 16GB DDR4-3200/3600 in 2x8GB. This is more than enough. Invest the difference in a better GPU.
AAA Gamers (Cyberpunk, Hogwarts Legacy, future GTA 6, etc.) with a tight budget: 16GB now, with a plan to upgrade to 32GB when prices drop or when you feel the need.
AAA Gamers with a comfortable budget (€1200+ config): 32GB DDR4-3600 in 2x16GB. You'll have maximum comfort, fewer micro-stutters, and headroom for years to come.
Streamers and Multitaskers: 32GB recommended. OBS + game + browser + overlay + Discord, it quickly goes beyond 16GB.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does 32GB of RAM give more FPS? In average FPS, very little (0-5%). But 1% low are significantly better, which eliminates micro-stutters. It's more of a gain in fluidity than raw power.
DDR4-3200 or DDR4-3600? If you have an AMD Ryzen 5000 CPU, aim for 3600 CL16 — it's the sweet spot for the AM4 platform. On Intel (LGA 1200 or 1700), 3200 CL16 is sufficient, 3600 brings a small bonus.
Can I mix different RAM sticks? Technically yes, but it's not recommended. Different sticks may run at different speeds, and the system will align with the slowest. Ideally, buy an identical kit or two kits of the same model.
