Ryzen 7 7700X3D: AMD's 3D V-Cache Becomes Affordable

It's one of the big announcements for processors this summer 2026: on July 16, AMD launched the Ryzen 7 7700X3D, a gaming CPU featuring 3D V-Cache technology, with a suggested retail price of $329 in the United States. That's $120 less than the launch price of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D when it was released. For gamers building an AM5 system, it's a much more accessible entry point to V-Cache than before.

What does the Ryzen 7 7700X3D offer?

On paper, the 7700X3D follows the recipe that made AMD's X3D chips so successful: a vertically stacked cache die on the CCD to boost available cache memory, a crucial factor in many games.

• Architecture: Zen 4, AM5 socket
• Cores / Threads: 8 cores and 16 threads
• L3 Cache: 96 MB (104 MB total cache)
• Frequencies: 4.0 GHz base, up to 4.5 GHz boost
• TDP: 120 W
• Memory: DDR5 mandatory, as with the entire AM5 platform

The frequencies are lower than a classic 7700X, a common characteristic of X3D models: stacked cache imposes thermal limits. In games, the extra cache makes the difference, especially in memory-intensive titles like simulations, strategy games, or large open-world games.

Why this launch matters

Until now, 3D V-Cache technology was limited to processors priced above €400. With this 7700X3D, AMD is bringing its flagship gaming argument to a price segment where "classic" CPUs were mainly found. The direct consequence is that the performance-to-price ratio for gaming on the AM5 platform is improving, and competition with Intel's Core i5 and i7 is intensifying in the mid-range.

Note: Availability was initially limited to certain retailers in North America in the third quarter. In France, definitive availability and pricing in euros will depend on retailers in the coming weeks.

Should you wait for the 7700X3D to build your PC?

It all depends on your budget and your usage. If you're aiming for a gaming-oriented AM5 configuration and your processor budget is around €300-350, this 7700X3D is definitely worth keeping an eye on. If your budget is tighter, a Ryzen 7 7700X remains a solid choice: it maintains higher frequencies, which is also useful for application usage (streaming, editing, heavy office work).

And if you're on AM4 or an entry-level budget, there's no rush: Ryzen 5500 and 5700X with DDR4 remain very coherent options for 1080p, especially when paired with an RTX 5060 or an equivalent card.
