Hidden Temperatures of RTX 50: VRAM Finally Readable
It was one of the recurring criticisms leveled at GeForce RTX 50 cards: since the launch of the Blackwell generation, Nvidia no longer provided hotspot and memory chip temperatures to monitoring software. GPU-Z, HWiNFO, MSI Afterburner, and HWMonitor could only display a "average" GPU temperature, which was far less informative. This month, the community broke through the barrier.
Sensors Present, but Masked by Nvidia
The sensors never disappeared from the silicon: Nvidia simply stopped exposing them via its official NVAPI interface. In early July, a video by developer Paulo Gomes showed how to directly access Blackwell card registers to read this hidden data. Immediately, the main monitoring tools integrated the discovery:
- HWiNFO (beta v8.51) now displays the hotspot and the temperature of each GDDR7 chip — up to 16 modules on an RTX 5090, including on cards with memory on both sides of the PCB.
- HWMonitor 1.65 restores hotspot reading across the entire RTX 50 series.
- A community plugin for MSI Afterburner (BlackwellHotspot.dll) exposes six temperature readings as well as a "Hotspot Delta," the difference between the hottest and coldest points on the card.
A small drawback: these readings rely on direct register access, a method not officially supported by Nvidia. A future driver update could theoretically complicate things, although the extent of adoption makes this scenario unlikely.
Why These Temperatures Truly Matter
The "average" GPU temperature can mask significant differences. Community readings have shown cards displaying 68 °C on the classic sensor while the hotspot approached critical thresholds. It is precisely the hottest point that triggers throttling — the automatic reduction of frequencies to protect the card.
GDDR7 memory is equally concerned: if poorly ventilated, it heats up more than the GPU itself on some models, especially during a heatwave or in a poorly ventilated case. Being able to monitor each chip individually allows you to:
- detect a problem with thermal paste or faulty pads before failure;
- verify the actual effectiveness of your case's airflow;
- validate an undervolt or a custom fan curve;
- diagnose unexplained throttling in games.
How to Benefit Now
If you own an RTX 50, the simplest method is to install the latest HWiNFO beta: the new entries automatically appear in the graphics card sensor section. Afterburner users can add the community plugin to display the hotspot directly in the in-game overlay via RivaTuner.
During the summer, it's a good time to take a look at these values: if your hotspot regularly exceeds 95-100 °C or if your memory chips are flirting with their limits, a dusting, better ventilation, or a slight undervolt can make a real difference to the card's longevity.
