AMD Zen 6: first announcements confirmed for July 22

It's official: AMD will launch its Zen 6 architecture at the Advancing AI 2026 event, on July 22 and 23 in San Francisco. AMD CTO Mark Papermaster confirmed that the sixth generation of the architecture powering Ryzen and EPYC will debut there. This is a significant step, even if gamers will have to wait a bit longer.

EPYC Venice Kicks Things Off, Not Ryzen

As is often the case with AMD in recent years, server processors will be the first to feature the new architecture. The 6th generation EPYC processors, codenamed Venice, will be the first Zen 6 CPUs announced on July 22.

On paper, the numbers set the tone for what Zen 6 has in store:

  • Up to 256 cores per processor, compared to 192 for the current EPYC Turin, a 33% jump
  • Approximately 1.7x performance and efficiency announced compared to the previous generation
  • 30% increase in thread density
  • First mass production on TSMC's 2nm node

This last point is the most significant: Zen 6 inaugurates 2nm etching in volume, a first in the x86 industry. This process will then serve as the basis for consumer versions.

What About Desktop PCs?

Zen 6 Ryzen processors for desktop and laptop PCs are not expected for several more months. The most probable window mentioned by specialized press is CES 2027, in January. AMD is following the same pattern as with Zen 4 and Zen 5: servers first, then desktop.

Good news, by the way: the AM5 socket should accommodate these future Ryzens. Owners of a recent AM5 motherboard would therefore have an upgrade path to Zen 6, which strengthens the platform's appeal for a purchase in 2026.

What This Means for a PC Purchase in 2026

Should you wait for Zen 6 to build or buy a gaming PC? For the vast majority of gamers, no. Firstly, because desktop Ryzen Zen 6 are still at least six months away, and the initial prices of a new 2nm generation will not be cheap, especially in the current context of rising memory and component costs.

Secondly, because the current offerings already cover real needs very well: a Ryzen 7 7700X on AM5 already offers very good gaming performance, and AM4 platforms (Ryzen 5500, 5700X) remain very rational choices in the entry and mid-range. The arrival of Zen 6 could even, in the long term, relax the prices of current generations.
