Install Windows 11 Clean: The Complete Guide

Clean Install Windows 11: The Complete Guide

A clean installation of Windows 11—that is, starting from scratch, without superfluous software inherited from an old system—remains the best foundation for a responsive and stable PC. Whether you're building a new machine, changing an SSD, or wanting to start with a fresh foundation, this guide will walk you through it step-by-step. No step is complicated; just follow them in order.

What You Need Before You Start

  • A USB flash drive of at least 8 GB (its contents will be erased).
  • Access to a functional PC to prepare the drive.
  • An internet connection.
  • Your Windows 11 license (or a Microsoft account linked to a digital license).
  • The SSD on which you want to install the system, preferably an NVMe for fast loading times.

Important: Back up your important data before any manipulation. A clean installation erases the target disk.

Step 1: Create the USB Installation Drive

Go to the official Microsoft website and download the Media Creation Tool for Windows 11. This utility downloads the latest version of the system and prepares the drive automatically.

  • Plug in your USB drive.
  • Launch the tool and accept the terms.
  • Choose to create installation media, then select your USB drive as the destination.
  • Let the tool download and copy the files. Allow a few minutes depending on your connection.

At the end of the process, your drive will be bootable, meaning it can start the PC to the installer program.

Step 2: Prepare the BIOS / UEFI

When the PC starts, press the key to access the BIOS (often Del, F2, or F12 depending on the motherboard). Once in the UEFI interface, check a few points:

  • Boot Mode: Make sure you are in UEFI mode (not Legacy), which is required for Windows 11.
  • Secure Boot: Enable Secure Boot, which is required by Windows 11.
  • TPM: Verify that the TPM 2.0 module is enabled (often called "PTT" for Intel or "fTPM" for AMD).
  • Boot Order: Place the USB drive first, or use the quick boot menu (often F11 or F12) to boot from it temporarily.

Save and exit. The PC will restart and should launch the installation program from the USB drive.

Step 3: Start the Installation

The Windows 11 assistant opens. Follow the first steps:

  • Choose the language, time format, and keyboard (English).
  • Click "Install now."
  • Enter your product key, or choose "I don't have a product key" if your license is digital and linked to your hardware or Microsoft account.
  • Select the edition of Windows 11 that corresponds to your license.
  • Choose the "Custom" installation type for a clean install (not an upgrade).

Step 4: Partition the SSD

You will arrive at the disk management screen. This is where you need to be careful not to erase the wrong disk.

  • Identify your target SSD (by its displayed capacity).
  • For a completely clean installation, delete existing partitions on this disk, then select the unallocated space.
  • Click "Next": Windows will automatically create the necessary system partitions.

If you have multiple disks, make sure to only erase the one dedicated to the system. A secondary data disk can be left intact.

The installation then copies files and restarts several times. At this point, remove the USB drive to avoid restarting the installer.

Step 5: Initial Setup (OOBE)

After the files are copied, Windows 11 starts its initial configuration:

  • Region and keyboard layout.
  • Wi-Fi or Ethernet network connection.
  • Microsoft account login (or account creation).
  • Privacy settings: take the time to disable tracking options you're not interested in.

Once these steps are completed, you will arrive at the Windows 11 desktop.

Step 6: First Settings After Installation

The system is installed, but a few actions ensure a high-performing and up-to-date machine:

  • Windows Update: Run a check for updates and install them. This fixes vulnerabilities and improves compatibility.
  • Drivers: Install your graphics card driver from the manufacturer's website (Nvidia or AMD). Also install your motherboard chipset driver.
  • Storage Verification: Confirm that the SSD is correctly detected and operating in the appropriate mode (NVMe).
  • Essential Software: browser, office suite, gaming platform. Avoid installing unnecessary utilities that slow down startup.

Tips for Keeping Your PC Responsive

A clean installation only stays clean if you avoid accumulating superfluous programs. A few good habits:

  • Limit programs launched at startup (via Task Manager, Startup tab).
  • Keep your graphics drivers up to date, especially before a major game release.
  • Keep some free space on the SSD to preserve its performance.
  • Regularly back up your important data.

In Summary

Clean installing Windows 11 involves a few steps: preparing a USB drive, configuring the BIOS, partitioning the SSD, following the assistant, and then updating drivers and the system. In about an hour, you'll have a healthy and responsive machine.
